About This Item

Portland, Maine: Thomas B. Mosher, 1923. xv, [1], 124pp, [2]. With a portrait frontispiece. Title in red and black. Bound by Belgian binder Jules Karel Van West (1889-1968) in contemporary brown half-morocco, marbled boards, contrasting green morocco lettering pieces, T.E.G. Marbled endpapers. Later inked gift inscription to recto of front blank fly-leaf. Original publisher's paper lettering-pieces pasted to stubs at rear. A fine copy. A finely bound American edition, produced by Mosher, of British Arabist and explorer Richard Francis Burton's (1821-1890) long poem, a pseudo- translation containing a distillation of Sufi thought. Composed in 1857, the work was not published until 1880, in a run likely consisting of no more than 200 copies. Though neglected upon release, The Kasidah became quite popular after Burton's death, going through many editions and long remaining in print. . 8vo.

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
