About This Item
Inscribed to Esther Ilse Hoffe by Max Brod.
Brod was the translator of the work to German.
Janácek probably decided in early 1919 to set Ostrowski's "Das Gewitter" to music. It is not surprising that he chose a Russian theme for this opera, since Janácek, co-founder of the Russian circle in Brno, was a lover of Russian culture and often took inspiration from Russian literature. The opera premiered on November 23, 1921 at the National Theater in Brno under the direction of Frantisek Neumann. Almost exactly a year later, on November 30, 1922, Katja Kabanova took the stage in the Prague National Theater.
