Bakersfield: Press of The Bakersfield Californian for the Kern County Historical Society, in Co-operation with Kern County Chamber of Commerce. Pamphlet. 52p., good presswork on alkaline glazed paperstock, softbound in 10x6.5 inch printed wraps. Covers are slightly soiled, staples are rusted with some migration, an otherwise nice clean copy. Godey (article p.21-52) was a reticent man whom scandal dogged; did he poison 42 local Native Americans (to get a certain female)? did he poison 900 (no motivation)? did he lynch a settler named Gray? Author Latta thinks not, aduces exculpatory evidence. Edward Kern (article pp.4-20) was closely associated with John C. Fremont; he appears to have been an unremarkable military man at times at odds with the General.
