Cassell & Company Ltd, 1885. 1st edition, 2nd state.. Hardback. Cloth, G. 320pp+16pp publishers adverts, folding colour frontis, a poor copy of the second issue of one of the seminal novels of the Victorian era. Hinges weak front & rear, large repaired tear to the map, spine wrinkled & bubbled as if from having been wet at some time, sporadic foxing. An early issue of the first edition - Title page dated 1885, adverts at rear dated 5.G10.8 and 5B.10.85. The typographical errors are all corrected. Immensely popular tale of African Adventure which was written by Haggard as a bet with his brother. The book was the first work of fiction set in Africa & one of the earliest 'Lost World' adventures, spawning a whole sub genre of adventure literature.
Synopsis
King Solomon's Mines (1885) is a popular novel by the Victorian adventure writer and fabulist, Sir H. Rider Haggard. It tells of a search of an unexplored region of Africa by a group of adventurers led by Allan Quatermain for the missing brother of one of the party. It is the first English fictional adventure novel set in Africa, and is considered the genesis of the Lost World literary genre.

Modern hardbacks are described as being Cloth bound, even though predominantly they come in paper covered boards pressed to look like cloth. Book grades are given book then dustjacket (if any) Running from F - Fine, VG - Very Good, G - Good, P - Poor. A fine book will look almost like the day it was bought, a VG one will have some evidence of prior ownership, G means a nice clean copy, obviously secondhand & P implies a COMPLETE copy that has suffered a hard life & will need some TLC. We take into account the books age when grading, so a 250 year old book graded as VG will look more second hand that a 5 year old book graded the same. On the Net since 1998. All prices are in GBP.
