About This Item
London: L. Braill & Sons, 1870. Aquatint engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, after a photograph by Mason. A fine quality aquatint by an unidentified engraver.
Braill and Sons here continue a tradition, established by the Fullers and Ackermann in the 1820s, of providing a top quality aquatint portrait of the winner of Britain's greatest classic race over the flat. A sign of the times, however is that the image from which the print was made was provided by a photographer, rather than a painter.
