Interior is clean and unmarked, pages crisp. Dust jacket has some large closed tears on rear panel; soiling on spine and rear panel; shows general edgewear; in a new clear archival sleeve. 293 pages. 7.4 x 4.75 inches. Scarce. The title page indicates that the publisher is Manhattanville Press and the spine is stamped Willey Book Co. Late work by the Catholic novelist, essayist, and managing editor of the Catholic Encyclopedia, Conde Benoist Pallen (1858-1929). In this novel, a twentieth century king doesn't want to be king. Royalty, to him, is bondage. He believes kingship is out of date; he has a democratic nature. He seeks to escape from the coil that wraps around him and wants to give a Republic to his people.
