Hippocrates, the "father of medicine" was born on Kos, and the island was famous in antiquity for its Asklepeion, sanctuary of Asklepios, the god of medicine. The island participated fully in Greek life in the classical, Hellenisitic, Roman, early Christian, and Byzantine periods. Later it was occupied by the Knights of St. John, the Ottomans, and the Italians, becoming a part of Greece only in 1947.
