About This Item

New York City, NY: Soho Press, 1995. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Soho Press, 1995. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 224 pages. The author's debut collection of short stories. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Edwidge Danticat's "Krik? Krak! : Stories". Nine wonderful stories that have strengthened Edwidge Danticat's stature, and fulfilled the promise that was evident in her debut novel. A writer of limpid, luminous, and often achingly poetic prose, Danticat is The Real Thing: A writer without a "message", but with a sensibility, mastery of the English language, and acute powers of observation and insight distinctly her own. Every book by Edwidge Danticat is quietly enthralling. It blows away the shallow and self-indulgent life stories of her fellow American writers, and deserves to be read by anyone who still cares about writing as literature. An absolute "must-have" title for Edwidge Danticat collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, dated, and inscribed in black pen on the title page by the author: "To Arlene, Krik? Krak! To you. Feel better soon. Edwidge Danticat. 5/2/96". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, who is named, is unmistakably personally known to the author. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, dated, and title-inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. It is the single most beautiful signed copy we have ever seen, with the handwritten repetition of the title itself being unique. Please note: The more a writer leaves of herself on the page, the better, not the other way around. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Foundation Grant in 1998 for "The Farming of Bones". Finalist for the National Book Award in 2007 for "Brother, I'm Dying". Selected by The New Yorker Magazine as one of the "Twenty Writers for the 21st Century". Winner of the MacArthur Genius Grant in 2009. One of the most brilliant American writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER EDWIDGE DANTICAT TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). Synopsis

Since the publication of her debut work Breath, Eyes, Memory in 1994, Edwidge Danticat has won praise as one of America's brightest, most graceful and vibrant young writers.  In this novel, and in her National Book Award-nominated collection of stories, Krik? Krak! , Danticat evokes the powerful imagination and rich narrative tradition of her native Haiti, and in the process records the suffering, triumphs, and wisdom of its people.  Author Paule Marshall has said of Danticat, "A silenced Haiti has once again found its literary voice." Born in Haiti in 1969, Danticat, like the protagonist of her novel Breath, Eyes, Memory , at the age of twelve left her birthplace for New York to reunite with her parents.  She earned a degree in French Literature from Barnard College, where she won the 1995 Woman of Achievement Award, and later an MFA from Brown University.  More recently, she has received an ongoing grant from the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Foundation. Critical acclaim and awards for her first novel included a Granta Regional Award for the Best Young American Novelists, a Pushcart Prize and fiction awards from Essence and Seventeen magazines.  She was chosen by Harper's Bazaar as one of 20 people in their twenties who will make a difference, and was featured in a New York Times Magazine article that named "30 Under 30" creative people to watch.  This winter, Jane magazine named her one of the "15 Gutsiest Women of the Year." Danticat's second novel, The Farming of Bones , based upon the 1937 massacre of Haitians at the border of the Dominican Republic, will be published in September 1998 by Soho Press.
