About This Item

Jefferson, NC, U.S.A.: McFarland & Company, Incorporated Publishers, 2002. First Edition . Hard Back. Very Good/No Jacket. 7" x 10. 328 pages indexed. Brown glossy laminated covers illustrated with black and white photographs of Beverly Garland and Kathleen Hughes. Forewords by Kathryn Adams, Mala Powers and Marion Shilling. Photographic front cover of Beverly Garland in Badlands of Montana 1957 and Kathleen Hughes in Dawn at Socorro 1954. This is a follow up book to a 1999 book titled Westerns Women. Interviews with 50 Leading Ladies of Movie and Television Westerns From the !930's to the 1960's. In these two books Fitzgerald and Magers focus on the long overlooked contribution of women in westerns and the actresses who portrayed them. The classical western movie has given us our unique American folklore that embodies the pioneer spirit of this nation. Westerns also embody and characterize the basic moral forces of both the male and the female. While the hero contributes the physical action that slays the ever-threatening dragons, it is the heroine who carries the civilizing values that lead us into the future. Without her, the western becomes one-sided and easily slips into violence for the sake of violence. Illustrated with black and white photos on almost every page.
