About This Item

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1981.. 1st edition. "An absorbing look at the changing status of women in the detective story and the spy thriller....As they say, the idea of a woman detective is 'bound to appear progressive', even if she's only an elderly busybody and proceeds largely by 'feminine' intuition rather than by reason. Yet the advance in women's status was slow and timid. Even women authors who were strong feminists (e.g. Sayers0, or men authors with liberal-left views (e.g. Day Lewis), or husband-and-wife teams (e.g. the Coles) gave women a poor showing. As for women spies, for decades they were little more than Mata Hari figures..." Pp.252, frontispiece + 12 further illustrations. Maroon boards, dustwrapper has sunning to spine and minor wear to base of spine. VG/G+.
