About This Item

Oxford University Press, London., 1949. First edition. Octavo. pp viii, 98. Custom binding of full cream buckram with leather title label running most of the length of the spine. Top edge gilt.Bound in at the rear is a sheet on which is mounted a black and white photograph of a scene from the play and which is signed in pencil by the photographer and set designer Angus McBean. Signed on the verso of the title-page by the author, John Gielgud and Pamela Brown. Gielgud and Brown starred in the first production of the play in London. On the first blank is the ownership signature, dated 1949, of Irish theatrical philanthropist Judith E. Wilson. Loosely inserted is an Autograph Letter Signed to her by ''Dorothy''. On the front pastedown is the bookplate of film director, actor and writer Bryan Forbes. There are various markings, deletions and amendments to the text in an unknown hand but which appear to make this an acting copy.On the front free endpaper is the small and neat ownership signature of Canadian writer, critic and editor John Metcalf. Front and rear blanks a bit tanned. Fine.
