About This Item

Brooklyn: Rome Brothers, 1866. Hardcover. Very good overall. A sammelband of engraved views of North America and Europe, with a title page and half title printed by the Rome Brothers for "D.M.T." The Rome Brothers achieved fame as the Brooklyn printers of the first edition of Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass". Because Whitman was a printer and editor, he place high demands on publishers and had selected the Rome Brothers for his prized manuscript. "Immigrants from Scotland, brothers Andrew, James and Thomas ran a print shop known primarily for its legal publications. Andrew Rome had known Whitman since 1849, and the Rome family saw Whitman as someone who soon would make his mark on the world." (1)

Small 4to, pp half title; title page and 114 steel engraved plates with tissue guards. Half red morocco binding with marble boards. Some cracking of the hinges but boards holding. A unique collection of 114 separately published engravings of similar dimensions each with a tissue guard. There is a printed title page complete with Author (D.M.T.) Title, publisher place and date. The first three-quarters of the book is titled "United States" with the last 37 plates titled "Canada" despite many of the views being of European locations. Some of the notable engravers & plates include James Smillie, the Palisades; A.J. David, Blithewood Dutchess Co.; James Hart, Mt. Pisgah, (Putnam County); Brevoort, Kingston Creek (1864 ); Albert Bierstadt, Chimney Rock; A.B. Durand, Landscape; Thomas Cole, Schroon Lake. There are also unattributed views of Harvard; St Joseph, Missouri; Nauvoo, Mississippi; Near the mouth of the Miami River. Some of the areas represented are New York City and vicinity, the Adirondacks, Upstate NY incl. Niagara Falls.

Not recorded on OCLC. From the collection of Dr. George R. Brush of Saville Long Island NY with his stamp on the title page. Brush was a naval doctor who spent much time in the Pacific with the US Navy.
