George Wharton James was a prolific booster of California through his many books on the beauties of the state published in the first decades of the 20th century. He was a part of the circle of writers that formed in Carmel following the San Francisco earthquake of 1906; including Jack London, George Sterling, Mary Austin, et al. Cowan 277 (Vol IV). First edition was published in 1915.
