Lakewood; New York: The hotel; The Gile Company, Lith, 1891. Printed menu (20 x 13.5 cm.), [1] page. A menu for the Lakewood, a resort hotel in the town of the same name, in central New Jersey, near but not on the shore. The meal was rather elaborate, with courses of soup, joints, entreés, roast, salads, vegetables, entremet, pastry, ice cream, desert (sic), and coffee - "the drinking water is from our own Artesian well". Individual dishes include Blue Point Oysters, Chicken Gumbo, Smelts Colbert, Chicory, Dandelion, Russian Turnips, Beignet of Apples, Corn Starch Pudding Vanilla Sauce, Cherry Wine Jelly, Framboise Ice, Malaga Grapes, a cheese plate, etc. And if the plentitude of food didn't set one towards sleep, "at none o'clock in the Music Room Prof. Allan Latham will give his fourteenth evening of pictures. Fifty views of Ireland, England, and France..." The head of the menu is a chromolithograph illustration, a cutaway of the hotel's lobby, bustling with arrivals and others relaxing in chairs. Very light soil and a bit of rubbing at the edges. Otherwise near fine.
