Pp. 260(last blank), 4 plates, full page maps and plans, index; post 8vo; tan cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, with publisher's device at foot in pale blue, fore-corners of boards slightly bruised; dust wrapper, edges rubbed and split, the backstrip slightly browned; bookplate of Benjamin Tindale on upper pastedown, edges of leaves lightly foxed; Readers Union, London, 1946. Book Club edition. *Originally published by Faber and Faber in 1943. In 1628, the Portuguese Augustinian friar, Sebastiao Manrique, was sent to Bengal, where the Portuguese had a settlement. 'Bengal is adjacent to Arakan, a country which is now part of Burma, but then was an independent kingdom inhabited by a Mongolian race closely resembling the Burmese. To this kingdom Manrique was obliged to go the following year' [Introduction].
