About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1881. Octavo. First American edition. Two volumes, uniformly bound. Dark blue publisher's cloth with a large gold gilt illustration of a sun and black birds stamped to the front board, with the birds also stamped to the back boards, and gilt lettering and a black emblem stamped to the spines. Brown coated endpapers. Heavily illustrated with black and white engravings and a large colour map folded into a pocket affixed to the rear board. Some rubbing to the boards, mostly the head and tail of the spines, which are beginning to fray a bit, and the corners. Some toning throughout. Due to the extremely acidic nature of the paper, the map is tearing at the fold lines, but all parts are present. An attractive bound set in very good condition. This heavily illustrated set was written by the French-American zoologist, anthropologist and traveler, Paul Belloni Du Chaillu, after he spent over five years in Northern Europe studying the customs and antiquities in Sweden, Norway, Lapland and Northern Finland.

Additional postage will be required for this set, as it is rather heavy--please inquire. 1881
