About This Item
Paris, chez Batilliot fils, Librairie, rue du Foin-St.-Jacques, 1803 x, 287 printed pages. Half title slightly creased, soiled and worn at the edges. Pages 279 and 283 are missing the top corners, not affecting the text. Marginal old stain on last few leaves, not affecting the text. This is a brutal character assasination of the English, disdaining their customs and habits and accusing them of being suicidal depressives. Fine English gentlemen were alleged, by this author, to have been across to France like a troop of badly behaved monkeys, taking their cooks, wigmakers and chambermaids with them, just to buy up the all the fashionable objects there. It is full of similar insulting but possibly accurate descriptions. German charcoal marbled endpapers. 17 x 10.5 cm. Bound in continental quarter calf, spine in blind tooled compartments with double gilt rules, gilt lettering and simple gilt tooling. Both boards are covered in attractive and unusual variant on reverse combed marbled paper (possibly of German execution). Corners and lower back hinge slightly worn. A second edition was published in 1804 that is equally uncommon. COPAC lists a sole copy in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. WORLDCAT lists 3 copies in Universitätsbibliothek Erfurt, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek Munchen, & Bibliothek der Humboldt-Universität Berlin. This is an extremely uncommon and very attractively bound volume of a presumanbly French anonymous author's idiosyncratic & sour view of the English, published just a few years after the French revolution.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good.
