First edition of L'Antiquité Expliquée, et Représentée en Figures by Bernard de Montfaucon, published in Paris in 1719, with supplements published in 1724. This set contains the first three volumes in six, with supplements. Folio, [8 volumes]. All bound in full calf, title in gilt over red morocco spine labels, raised bands, decorative gilt compartments. Marbled endpapers, silk bookmarks. All volumes with some archival reinforcement to hinges, cracking to outer joints, rubbing to boards. All volumes with a few points of foxing, generally clean plates. Dampstain to fore edge of Volume III, Part II, minimal impact to text. Includes an engraved frontispiece portrait by J. Audran after N. Largilliere in Volume I, Part I. This work Includes hundreds of engravings, all numbered, with a few bound out of order. Volume I contains 224 plates, 88 plates in Supplement; 193 plates in Volume II (including large fold-out); and 197 in Volume III, 84 in Supplement. (Brunet III 1861) (Cohen-De Ricci 731-732) (Cicognara 2493) An attractive set. This monumental work on classical archaeology contains illustrations of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman art and architecture.
