About This Item
Rare Floridiana * Group of 19th Century Stereoviews * Including One of "Uncle Jack, the Oldest Inhabitant"
37 stereoview photographs on original mounts, about 4 x 7 inches.
AN ATRACTIVE GROUP OF ORIGINAL STEREOVIEWS FROM FLORIDA IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. 28 of these were published by George Barker of Niagara Falls. Almost all depict St. Augustine, including the Ponce de Leon Hotel and nearby Fort Marion. Other subjects include a "cracker house with mud chimney," and a less condescending than usual "race" scene showing a celebration of "New Year's Day in the Sunny South." Another series of 9 on different mounts by an uncredited photographer also focus on St. Augustine, and include an elderly African-American man named "Uncle Jack, the Oldest Inhabitant," as well as the obligatory alligator
