About This Item
Frankfurt et Leipzig (printer not named), 1746.. FIRST EDITION 1746. Divided into 2 parts. Small 8vo, approximately 165 x 100 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, pages: [16], 1-238, woodcut vignette to title page and 3 others as tailpieces, rebound in modern panelled calf, maroon and black gilt lettered morocco labels to spine, extra gilt spine with raised bands, new marbled endpapers, marbled edges. Pale age-browning throughout, tip of top corner missing from last page, not near text, the first 3 letters in the publisher's imprint are missing, printer's error, otherwise a very good copy. See: A Catalogue of Printed Books in the Wellcome Historical Medical Library, Volume 3, page 62: "Attributed to Franklin (the binder had put Franklin's name on the spine) but according to the preface it was written by a French chemist who died in 1745 aged over ninety-six. The attribution is probably due to confusion with Franklin's Art of Procuring Pleasant Dreams; a brief essay published in 1786". MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE.
