About This Item

London England: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1957. Hardback. First Edition. Slight foxing to end inside covers and edge. Slight shelf wear to edge of D/J. The nomad tribes of Southern Persia are among the world's hardiest and most independent people. The author recently travelled to Southern Persia to investigate one of these tribes, a hundred thousand strong. In this book he recounts a single year in their annals: a crucial year when the tribe's whole way of life was threatened by settlements. The book shows the tribe facing this new struggle for survival against a background of day-to-day routine: tending herds of sheep, goats and camels; hunting partridge and gazelle; storytelling. But the book is chiefly concerned with one man, the Ilkhan, who has absolute command of the tribe: with his complex reactions, both personal and in his capacity as leader, to the threat of settlement. Primarily a biography, this book also throws considerable light on Persia at the present day. Some of the action passes at Teheran; and among those involved in the tribe's fate are Army officers, politicians, landowners and the members of an international team of enquiry. 343 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) . First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardback.
