Macdonald has conjured up the sights and sounds of the First World War and all its horrors and has also captured the heartfelt feelings of the soldiers. She brings to life the massive German offensive of Spring 1918 that became the second Battle of Somme, a devastating assault told in the words of the men who survived it--the war-weary British Tommies, the eager German foot soldiers, the commanders on both sides, the French poilus, the Aussies and Kiwis, and as-yet-untested doughboys fresh from the U. S. 416 pages. 9 x 6 x 1.25". 2001, Carrol& Graf Publishers /Avalon Publishing Group.
