London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1956. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Good +. The interior of the book is clean and tight, with no marks or signatures. The "First Printed 1956" statement is present on the copyright page. The brown covers are fresh, with very light wear at tips and corners. The gilt spine lettering has dulled. The dust jacket is only in Good condition, with a price-clip and a patch of damage (about 2" by 1' of visible rips and folds) in the bottom corner of the front panel which shuld be visible in the attached scans. The jacket is now in a protective mylar cover.

Synopsis

Mary Renault was born in London and educated at Oxford. She then trained for three years as a nurse, and wrote her first published novel, Promise of Love . Her next three novels were written while serving in WWII. After the war, she settled in South Africa and traveled considerably in Africa and Greece. It was at this time that she began writing her brilliant historical reconstructions of ancient Greece, including The King Must Die, The Last of the Wine , and The Persian Boy . She died in Cape Town in 1983.
