Portland, ME, 1851. Signed William Pitt Fessenden letter from his law firm, Fessenden & Deblois.
Fessenden was born in New Hampshire in 1806 but would spend most of his life in Maine. He was a lawyer, Representative, Senator, and later the United States Secretary of the Treasury under Lincoln during the Civil War. Fessenden was vehemently against Slavery and helped start an Anti-Slavery Coalition while in the Maine State Legislature.
The letter itself is in good condition. On line 5 of the letter there is a section crossed out in ink with a correction above it. Stampless letter with address on back. Tear in the upper right corner. Some small ink lettering on back of the letter that was done later. Dated Sept. 15, 1851 from Portland, ME.
