1856. Second royal octavo edition. Very good +. The royal octavo edition of Birds of America as first published in 1840-44, and was followed by several more editions. This plate is from the second edition, published in 1856, distinct for the colored backgrounds. They are also a little different in that one species is pictured rather than a grouping of birds. This work was done to make Audubon's prints, highly in demand, more affordable for the general public. These hand colored lithographs were printed by J. T. Bowen. University of Colorado, 1927. VG+ in Fair brown paper wrapper. Book is As New except for all four corners being slightly bumped and rubbed. DJ is really just a light paper wrapper with the University logo on the front. This is acidic, brittle, torn, creased, and soiled. It has done its job protecting the book within. Period booksellers label to pastedown and two prior owner's names with dates of 1897 and 1937; spotting to last few pages of index, and an occasional spot in text; front hinge is partially cracked although all pages holding strong; spine has light lean; boards have some rubbing. In good to very good condition.

Volume I is number 733 of 1000 copies inscribed by the author. Volume II is number 327 of 500 copies signed by the author.

New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1925. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Presentation copy, inscribed and dated in the year of publication by Wendell Endicott on the front flyleaf. An avid sportsman, Endicott (1880-1954) attended Harvard University (1899-1901) and served as a director of Sears, Roebuck and Company in Chicago during the 1920s and '30s. This book includes his reminiscences of battling the "Silver King" (Atlantic tarpon) and other game fish along the Florida Keys, as well as a selection of fishing facts and suggestions. Octavo: 273 p. with 80 illustrations from photographs by the author. Original dark green cloth-covered boards over a light green spine, with gilt stamping. Just a hint of foxing to the prefatory and concluding pages, with some faint evidence of moisture along the top edge of the last three dozen pages. Tiny period bookseller's label to the front flyleaf. The spine is a touch faded, with some rubbing to the corners and tips; else about very good.
