A narrative poem in six cantos by Walter Scott, a ninth edition of 1808, first published in 1805. One of Sir Walter Scott's most successful poems, concerning an ageing minstrel who seeks hospitality at Newark castle, paying his hostess with a story of sixteenth century Border feud. Critics praised Scott for the use of picturesque subject and authentic portrayal of sixteenth century Border society. In a full calf binding, with new endpapers. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear, light sunning to the spine, rubbed to the extremities. Jane Adey's ink inscription to the half title, dated 1808. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting scattered to the leaves. Very Good Indeed
