London: William Smith, 1111. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 'The Lay of the Last Minstrel' is a long narrative poem written in six cantos. First published by William Smith in 1939. This copy is missing the title page. This copy also has no copyright page, but is believed to be first edition and printing (1939). In good tan morocco, with gilt tooled back strip with five horizontal raised bands. Front cover has gilt school crest with 'Hereford Propietary School' in gilt. The covers are very tight, with wear to edges and sides of spine, but otherwise not marked. Attractive muti-coloured marble end papers and cut edges in sound condition. The text block is tightly bound and square, with signs of water damage to the top and tail ends of frontispiece. The pages are a little marked, but not tanned. Beneath title on the half title page 'Sir Walter Scott' has been added in pencil; on facing page is added 'no title page but pub William Smith & Co 1835/1839. No inscriptions. Overall good condition. Quite scarce.

Clevedon Community Bookshop, co-operatively owned, opened on 31 December 2011 and now has a general stock of approximately 20,000 books. Our bookshop in Copse Road is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm. The co-operative comprises just over 600 members from around the world and was set up to stop the only second-hand bookshop in our town from closing. The benefit of being a member/shareholder is only social: no-one benefits financially. All profits are used to improve the bookshop and its stock, and, through events, to contribute to the literacy and literary profile of our town.
