London: Smith, Elder, and Co., 65 Cornhill., 1854. First edition. 19.5 cm x 13 cm (crown octavo), expertly re-cased original publisher's brown cloth with spine panel laid down and most original design elements faithfully preserved, page edges lightly trimmed (as issued), pp. viii, 239 + fourteen plates containing twenty figures, engraved upon wood from drawings by the author. Frontispiece (numbered Plate II), drawn by Millais, and engraved in Mezzotint and line by T. Lupton. Publisher's catalogue dated April 1854 at end (as noted by Wise). Presentation inscription, not in the author's hand; "With the Author's Compliments". Early ownership signature on title page:" William Richardson A.M. M.D.". William Richardson (July 26,1811-Sept. 18, 1875) was a cousin of Ruskin, and attended Effie Ruskin as a physician. Ruskin considered Richardson to be the best chess player he had ever known. Subsequent ownership of Richardson's daughter J[ane] Ruskin Richardson on front free endpaper, Unprinted folding flaps attached at base of frontispiece and Plate 3, as issued.
