Hardcover. Original dark brown blindstamped cloth with titles stamped in gilt on spine. 155 pp + [1] pp publisher’s ads. Owner signature (Robert H. Canfield) dated April 7, 1852 on front free endpaper. Seven lectures on Christian ethics by the Rector of Christ Church, Hartford, Connecticut, entitled: Formation of Character, True Principles of Trade, Amusements, Books, Thought, To Young Women, and Analogy of Mechanical and Moral Progress. Rev. Clark on books: “...[R]ead for amusement only in the intervals of labor, and as a relaxation from substantial study. He who reads only for amusement, after a while finds it hard to be thus amused. He wearies even of his recreation. He becomes a gouty epicure, and the dish must be highly seasoned to stimulate his palate. ” p. 68 ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
