San Francisco: (The Grabhorn Press), 1927. Limited Edition. Self wrappers. Near fine. One of fifty special copies, duodecimo size, [62] pp. Flora Arnstein (1885-1990) was the daughter of a distinguished pioneer family; from an early age she was drawn to the arts and rebelled against the traditional values and obsession with wealth of her parents. She and her sister-in-law, Helen Salz, founded the Presidio Open Air School in 1918; a unique school that focused on the arts, outdoor activities, and social consciousness. Ms. Arnstein advocated for teaching poetry to children all her life, and began her own career as a poet around age 40.
This lovely little book of poetry was printed twice by the Grabhorns: early in 1927 they printed an edition of 100 copies for Ms. Arnstein (Grabhorn no. 94) and later that year, in November of 1927, a second edition was published which included seventeen additional poems. The second edition was printed in a regular version of 250 copies and a special version of only 50 copies, of which this is possibly a printer's mock-up, as it is not bound, nor signed, nor has the manuscript correction to page 11.
___DESCRIPTION: Sewn text-block, fore-edge uncut and most signatures unopened, decorative initials, printers device to colophon, Caslon Monotype type, Whatman paper, duodecimo size (approximately 7 and 5/8" by 5"), pagination: [i-iv] 1-61 [62] [1 colophon], second edition, limited edition, this one of fifty special copies (total edition 300 copies), lacks the ms correction on p. 11 and author's signature, leading us to believe this is a printer's mock-up.
___CONDITION: This copy is in near fine condition; it appears to have never been bound, this delicate variant is well preserved with only some faint rubbing to the outer wrappers, but otherwise bright and unscathed; near fine.
___CITATION: Grabhorn no. 100 (note that the first edition is Grabhorn no. 94).
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details.
