Toronto: Macmillan, 1962. G reen cloth, black spine label. pp xiv, (370) + 13 double-sided plates + 2 folding maps at rear. Light yellowing to page edges, else fine. Dust jacket spine faintly soiled, VG+ otherwise. Hornby was a Harrow-educated Englishman who in essence ran away to join the Indians in the Canadian North West. A man of mystery and the basis of legends in the North, he was a T.E. Lawrence-like figure who cultivated personal suffering and endurance, but unlike Lawrence he was in fact fairly inept, a foolhardy courage and endurance being his main asset. He couldn't swim, was a poor shot, and a bad planner in an inhospitable and unforgiving climate. In 1927, after 15 years in the bush, he was largely the cause of the death by starvation of himself, his 16 year old cousin, and another young man.. First Canadian issue. Hardcover. Oct.
