Book has a slight forward lean. Gilt lettering is bright and clear. Unclipped jacket has moderate edge-wear with chips, tears and creasing.

First Edition of this “authoritative biography” of the English explorer John Hornby in which “this restless figure is re-created and related to his contemporaries with whom he was associated during his wanderings in the Barren Lands.” (Story p. 362) In Inheriting a Canoe Paddle: The Canoe in Discourses of English-Canadian Nationalism (2013), Misao Dean describes Whalley’s biography as being beautifully written and meticulously researched, and identifies it as one of the great texts of Canadian modernism.
