About This Item

New York: Charles Scribener's Sons, 1948. 1st American Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo. Full grey buckram, red lettering to spine. xlvi, 176 pp., [4] B&W plates. Bookplate to front pastedown. Some bumping and creasing to lower corner of a few pages. Dust jacket lightly worn to extremities, a few scuffs to front cover, a few small chips and short tears. James the novelist has been recognized once more as a great technician - the "Master" who has profoundly influenced the art of fiction. But what of James the man? Pen-portraits and anecdotes of James are here assembled from upwards of a hundred and fifty contemporary sources, and are so arranged as to illustrate the different manifestations of the Legend - James as a talker, a diner-out, a West End clubman, an unsuccessful playwright; his methods of work; and finally his part in World War I, his British naturalization and his death bed apothegms.
