Beautifully illustrated with 8 wonderful full colour plates and dozens of line illustrations by Estella Canziani. A fine, bright copy in a fine, contemporary leather binding by Birdsall. Half dark green morocco, spine with raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments double ruled and decorated with gilt flowers, each with red coloured petals. Green cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. A fine pretty binding on this beautiful book. There was also a large paper, limited edition of this edition.:

Text in Greek, with English notes, 151pp., with a blank leaf interspersed after every page with students to take notes, bound in3/4 burgundy morocco over cloth, raised bands, title gilt within one compartment, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, a few pencil notations within the text but all blank leaves unmarked. A handsome copy.

Five spine compartments between raised bands with "Ariosto" in the second compartment and the volume number in the fourth. All page edges speckled red. Marbled endpapers matching that on the boards. Frontispiece engraving is signed: "Geoffroy sc." The fourth volume includes additional short poems by the author. Text is entirely in Italian. In Very Good- Condition: bindings archivally repaired; covers are lightly rubbed, with some loss of leather at spine ends; the frontispiece engraving has left a shadow on the title page of vol. 1; frontispiece and facing title page, as well as parts of vol. 3 also lightly foxed; otherwise pages are clean and tight.

Middletown, Connecticut: Wesleyan Univ. Press, 1959. 56 pages. First printing of Wright's relatively scarce second book. The title poem is a sonnet that makes clear this comment by poet and critic Ben Friedlander: "One does not turn to James Wright for laughter." The poem begins: "When I went out to kill myself, I caught a pack of hoodlums beating up a man." After this book Wright eschewed the use of rhyme, but the dark themes stayed with him. The book is in better than very good condition: clean and tight, with Just a hint of toning to spine; toning to endpapers, with previous owner's name/city/state written on ffep. A smattering of foxing to top and fore edges of textblock. DJ is toned, especially at spine; hint of soiling to front and rear; in new mylar.
