About This Item

Paris :: Firman-Didot et cie, 1894., 1894. Large 8vo. [4], XV, [1], 600 pp. Title-vignette, 2 plates, 198 figures, index; lightly foxed. Bound later by A. Schweighauser-Probst, Bern, in quarter vellum, gilt-stamped spine title, marbled boards; marbled board bottom edge scuffed (meaning the vellum is later and in near-fine condition). Rubber ownership stamp on title of G. [Guy] Loumyer. Das homerische Epos, aus den Denkmalern erlautert (The Homeric epic, explained from the monuments), was first issued in Leipzig 1884, with a second edition in 1887. This is a first French translation of Helbig's study of the Homeric monuments. / Wolfgang Helbig was a German classical archaeologist born in Dresden. He is known for his studies involving the wall paintings of Campania (Pompeii). PROVENANCE: Guy Loumyer, with his rubber-stamp, wrote a book, Les traditions techniques de la peinture medievale, (1914). And : Un traite de peinture du Moyen-Age: l'Anonymus Bernensis, (1908). I believe he was a resident of Bern.
