These letters offer perhaps the best picture from his own pen of Washington as an agriculturist and plantation owner, seeking to improve both his own lands and those of his country through correspondence with the leading British agricultural theorist. Arthur Young (1741-1820) was a noted British agriculturist with whom Washington established a lively correspondence during his retirement. With the responsibilities of administering his estate at Mount Vernon, Washington sought to gain a deeper understanding of the most successful modes of farming available.
