Original leather label still present. On the front fly leaf is an inscription from Dr Charles Everest to his mother in 1796. Later teo inscriptions from the mid nineteenth century.

Full calf, heavily rubbed at edges and at corners, in some places rubbed to board. Red spine label with gilt title. Chipped at ends of spine. Interior is clean and well-kept, with some light foxing (mainly to endpapers), general age-toning, previous owner's name on the title page.

"Hugh Smith (1730-90), Physician to the Middlesex Hospital, wrote several 'Letters to Married Women on the Nursing and Management of Children' which were published together in 1792 in a volume which might be described as the prototype of the modern mothercraft manual.
