About This Item
London: Printed by J. Flesher for Richard Marriot, 1651. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE OF ONE OF THE GREAT MASTERPIECES OF ENGLISH PROSE. 3 leaves; 318 pp; 1 blank leaf. Wanting the portrait and the initial blank. HARRY BUXTON FORMAN'S COPY, with his large bookplate. Forman, a formidable scholar and collector of English literature, is now perhaps best remembered for collaborating with Thomas J. Wise on his forgeries of 19th-century first editions. In any case, THIS book is certainly no forgery. Sm. 4to. Bound in old sheep. Binding somewhat worn but still solid. Internally FINE AND BRIGHT. A very good copy of a rare and important book.
