Emmanuel Schelstrate was a 17th-century Catholic clergyman known for being the Vatican Library librarian. While working in the Vatican, he wrote a number of works discussing various aspects of the Catholic Church including decrees of the popes, as well as reports on the Council of Constance which discuss the ecclesiastical powers that were determined in the fourth and fifth sessions of the 15th-century ecumenical council.

Saint Lawrence Justinian was a 15th-century Catholic bishop of Venice who was an important catalyst in the promotion of Catholic constitutions. His written works were extensive. An incredibly rare and impressive Elzevier printing of Thomas Smith's "Anglorum". During the first half of the 17th-century, Elzevier published numerous works on European countries designed for travel and studies (Respublica). Smith, a 16th-century English diplomat, was the Secretary of State under King Edward VI of England. He also served under Elizabeth I, and was one of her most trusted Protestant advisors. His most important books was 'De Republica Anglorum' – in which Smith described England's government style as a commonwealth. This work has become a staple in the study of the English constitution.

L'opera è composta da tre tomi legati insieme ed è completa. Il nome ed il culto di Santa Filomena nacquero con il ritrovamento nel 1802 di alcune ossa all'interno di una lapide nelle Catacombe di Priscilla a Roma. Per un errore di interpretazione nell'iscrizione della lapide Santa Filomena venne considerata martire, poi tolta dal calendario negli anni 1960. Beautifully Illustrated with 36 fine full colour plates by Russell Flint. Publishers green cloth with elaborate blind tooled decoration to the front boards and spines, which are also ruled and lettered in gilt. In the original scarce dustwrappers with colour plates mounted onto the front panels. The cloth boards are a bit dulled and there is a near one-inch tear, without loss, to the top of the spine of volume one, but the gilt is still strong and bright. The dustwrappers are faded to the spines, which have a few very minor chips to the extremities, but are generally in very good condition and sets with them present are uncommon. After studying medicine under the teaching of Thomas Sydenham, John Locke began his journey of philosophical thinking that would develop into some of his most famous works. In 1693, Locke published a treatise on education entitled 'Thoughts Concerning Education'. Throughout the 18th-century it was the most important work on the philosophy of education in England. This work was an extension from 'Concerning Human Understanding' in which he describes how to educate the 'blank slate' mind described in 'Human Understanding'.
