Montaigne. 8vo. later quarter leather with paper-covered boards, five raised bands, original wrappers bound in. (ii), xviii, 19-116, (2) pages, with 2 additional fold-out leaves. Transcription and fold-out facsimile of a "lettre inédite" by Montaigne (1533-1592) to a counsellor of Henry IV, found, according to the author, in a folio with an incorrect catalogue entry in the Bibliothéque Nationale. Includes a facsimile of the incorrect catalogue entry. Following this is a comparison of various catalogue entries in the Bibl. Nat. Manuscript Dept. with the actual holdings, showing that many folios are missing or lack some of their contents! Front cover detached, front free endpaper and back cover almost detached, spine missing pieces. Bookplate from private book-collector's club.
