About This Item

1792 1ed Letters of Mirabeau French Revolution Love Letters Sophie de Monnier 4v

Riqueti, Count of Mirabeau was an 18th-century French Revolution leader known for his involvement in political controversies and scandals. He spent much of the 1770s imprisoned for his anti-government disposition; however, his longest stint began in 1777 where he spent four years in Vincennes Castle. While there he wrote a series of letters to his mistress 'Sophie Ruffei', or Marie Therese de Monnier.

These love letters were collected and published by a P. Manuel in 1792; however, Manuel's acquisition of the letters was part of the controversy. The letters left the prison and were seen by police and magistrates where Manuel stole the letters and published them without permission of Sophie, Mirabeau, or the French government.
