About This Item
Bloomington: Indiana University Book. Good. Soft cover. pp3-18. Removed from INDIANA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY, Volume 59, No. 1, March, 1963. Wrps. VG. Also includes: LEW WALLACE'S MARCH TO SHILOH REVISITED, by Harold Lew Wallace, pp19-30 and LEW WALLACE AND THE FRENCH INTERVENTION IN MEXICO, by Robert Ryal Miller, pp31-50. This issue of the magazine was devoted principally to Lew Wallace. From the editor's notes: "Despite his fame as a novelist, Lew Wallace remains well, if not always favorably, known for his military activities. Born at Brookville, Indiana, in 1827, he was the son of David Wallace, the governor of Indiana from 1837 to 1840. Lew Wallace's early bent toward romanticism was stirred by his enthusiasm for William H. Prescott's History of the Conquest of Mexico (1843). During the Mexican War (1846-1848), young Wallace served as a second lieutenant. Although he and his men participated in no military action of significance, some of them were embittered by General Zachary Taylor's criticism of their bravery and devotion. In 1856 Wallace organized the Montgomery Guards, popularly known as the Zouaves, whom he dressed in a style reminiscent of French Algerian troops.".
