About This Item

New York: H. Long & Brother, 1851. Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, this appears to be the earliest US edition of this title that we found any reference to. There is no publication date in the book (ca. 1851), although there is a penciled note on the last page stating that it was read in March of 1866. In addition, we found an advertisement listed in the August 23, 1851 edition of The Literary World (number 238, page 155) which shows a reference to the Long & Brother's Edition. The exterior of the book is heavily worn with the paper boards showing extensive scuffing and edge wear, cloth on spine is split at the rear board and heavy chipping is present. On the interior front pastedown there is a note stating it was part of the St. Mary's library, and the rear pastedown contains a penciled signature of the original owner. The opposite rear end page shows damage in the upper outside corner along with some penciled numbers. Pages are quite toned due to age and there is a lot of spotting and boxing present. There is also a quadrant of pages, page 97 through 112, which extends out of the binding from pulling. The book is fair to poor condition but is complete, and all pages are still attached. Pages are printed in double column format. The last photo showing the book condition also shows a digital scan of the 1851 advertisement in The 1851 Literary Guild Magazine, showing the publishers claim of them being the authorized US printer of the London edition with a warning of: "Beware of the spurious Edition - also manufactured in New York".

Terms of Sale

Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Purchases will ship by US Media Mail or Priority Mail (if buyer selects) and higher priced items may have insured placed on the order and will typically ship within one business day. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 5 lbs., but only in unusual cases. Insurance is available upon request though we normally place insurance on any item of $75 or higher at no additional cost to the buyer. Non-US sales will ship by First Class International or Global Priority. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 4 lbs.

We always take extra care in packaging and shipping. Books are typically wrapped in packing paper or bubblewrap before packaged in a sturdt shipping box. All orders, even those shipped by US Media Mail, will be given a USPS tracking number which will be sent to the buyer so they will know when to expect arrival. Please let us know if there is a book with incorrect or missing photos. We recently moved the inventory to Biblio and a title or two may have had issues with the photos being transferred over.

Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

There is a 30 day money back guarantee if the book arrives damaged or is not as described. Please contact us prior if you have any issues with your purchases and we will make sure you are taken care of.

About Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.

All of the book pictures were taken at the time the book was listed and we never use generic or stock photos in any listing. If you would like additional photos or information on any listing please let us know and we will be more than happy to comply.
