Florence: Jacopo Guiducci, 1715. First Edition. Full leather. Very good +. 4to (263 x 185 mm).Large paper uncut copy. Full red sheep binding in style of 18th century Italian binding in red sheep. Raised bands and decorated bands; gilt author and title in upper panel. Collagtion: [2], xlix, [1- Colophon], 96 pp. (74 lv.) Imprimatur in text (c10). Half-title and title pages are present and have embossed monogram near fore edge, possibly Charles Berolzheimer s. Engraved frontispiece is portrait of Torricelli after Pietro Anichini. Printer's engraved device on title, 3 small text woodcuts, woodcut head and tail pieces and initials. Minor staining to edge of page.
First edition of Torricellis's twelve unpublished lectures delivered to the Accademia della Crusca, the Studio Fiorentino, and the Academy of Drawing. Bonaventuri's preface contains a biography of Torricelli and a good overview of his work; it also reprints Torricelli's letters on the barometric experiment (in response to Ricci's concerns -Norman). Provenance: This copy had been given to Charles P. Berolzheimer in 1977 at Stresa Italy by Dott Renato Candela. Evangelsita Torricelli was Galileo's most distinguished pupil... Torricelli... experimented and discovered that liquids are pushed up in a tube by the pressure of the atmosphere on the surface of the liquid outside the tub - thus, the barometer or Torricellian tube." (Sparrow, Milestones of Science ) Provenance: This copy had been given to Charles P. Berolzheimer in 1977 at Stresa Italy by Dott Renato Candela. (Dibner149; Norman, 2088)

FIRST EDITION 1715, small 4to, approximately 265 x 190 mm, 10½ x 7½ inches, Italian text, engraved portrait frontispiece after Pietro Anichini, printer's engraved device on title page, 3 small text woodcuts, woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials. Pages: [4], v- xlix, [1], 1-96, including half-title, LACKING IMPRIMATUR LEAF C10, bound in later stiff vellum with yapp edges, gilt lettered and decorated black morocco label, edges untrimmed. Vellum faintly marked and faded, 2 small light stains to lower cover, top edges dusty, strip of pale browning and faint damp staining to few upper margins of various sizes, affecting first 30 pages, not affecting printed area, tiny pale stain to 1 lower margin, otherwise contents clean and crisp. A very good copy. 12 posthumously published lectures by Galileo's successor as Professor of Mathematicsa at Florence, delivered to the Accademia della Crusca, the Studio Fiorentino, and the Academy of Drawing.
