A tight, clean, sound copy in white wraps with very minor overall shelf wear and an inscribed 'With the Compliments of The French Cultural Services Houston' label on the front endpaper. 'L'Homme de la pampa' (Man of the Pampa) is well known for its inventiveness and the story follows the adventures of a magician who toys with volcanoes. The hero, Fernandez y Guanamiru, returns to the family estate after a short trip. Once there he builds a huge building and creates an incredible, surreal park. But after a short time he becomes a little bit bored and so he decides to build a volcano. This does not happen quite as he planned and so he decides to travel to Europe with his volcano. In Europe he meets some amazing people and experiences an amazing number of surreal adventures. It is here that he also meets a mysterious young woman, 'Line du Petit Jour' (Line of Dawn). Jules Supervielle (1884-1960) was a French author born in Uruguay. His divided his time between Montevideo, where he was born, and Paris, where he was educated. His fiction is noted for its freshness and originality, a result of his use of South American 'magical realism'. The stories in his books all deal with grand subjects but with a style that is simple and which is noted for the use of fantasy, allegory and myth. His best know novels are 'L'Homme de la pampa' (1923) and 'Le Survivant' (1928). He also published collections of short stories including 'L'Enfant de la haute mer' (1931) and 'Le Petit Bos' (1942) as well as plays such as 'Bolivar' (1936) and collections of poetry, notably 'Poèmes de la France malheureuse' (1941). 4.9"x7.4", table (table of contents), du même auteur (by the same author), 192 pages.
