New York: Harper & Brothers, 1844. First authorized American edition, 1944, initially published in seven parts, now bound into one binding without the original wraps. Marbled boards with remains of leather spine, [6],312 pages plus 14 engraved plates. Covers detached and worn, first three printed leaves and two blanks starting to separate from the binding, binding otherwise sound, pages lightly to moderately foxed but clean, some light foxing to most plates, a little heavier to the firt two and final plates, half inch closed tear to the bottom edge of the plate at page 160, not affected printed area, no names or other markings - except for a really strange and very primitive pencil sketch what looks like a man in a skirt putting up his dukes to fight. Reading copy.. Hard Cover. Poor. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
