1838. First Edition . DICKENS, Charles. The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. London: Chapman and Hall, 1838-39. Twenty parts in nineteen. Octavo, original printed green wrappers neatly respined or repaired. Housed in a custom morocco clamshell box. $7800.First edition, first issue, in original parts of one of Dickens' most popular works, illustrated with 39 engraved plates by Hablot K. Browne (""Phiz""). A nicely refurbished copy with almost all of the advertisements present. The plot, the characters, the dialogue—indeed ""everything about [Nickleby] has the feel of theatre; it is as if Dickens saw human life conducted among lights of the stage, making it somehow large and brighter than the reality"" (Ackroyd, 283). Illustrated with 39 engraved plates by Hablot K. Browne (""Phiz"") and an engraved plate of Dickens after a portrait by Daniel Maclise in the final part. First issue text: Part 4 with ""visiter"" instead of ""sister"" on page 123, line 17, and Part 5 with ""latter"" instead of ""letter"" on page 160, six lines up. Almost all advertisements are present with the following exceptions: Part 8 without ""Tyas"" leaf at rear; Part 19/20 without 12-page ""Tyas"" insert at rear; the scarce ""Hill's Seal Wafers"" leaf is present at the rear of Part 19/20, though without the sample wafers, as often—""more often than not, the wafers are lacking"" (Hatton & Cleaver, 135). Part 3 WITH the large folding ""Amesbury's Supports"" described in the bibliography as ""scarce."" (The non-essential Ashby slip in Part 16 is not present in this copy.). Hatton & Cleaver, 131-160. Eckel 64. Smith 40. Old owner signatures to the front wrappers of two parts. Previous dealer collation notes laid in.Text and plates generally quite clean, with only a hint of foxing to a very few plates. Wrappers generally respined or with neat repairs along spines; Part 6 and Part 7 rear wrappers have been swapped, possibly at time of respining, as they are quite similar. Light wear and creasing along wrapper edges as often. An extremely good set in the original parts.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1839. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Browne, Hablot K. ['Phiz"]; Meadows, Kenney. First printing, mixed state, octavo size, 707 pp. This was writer Charles Dickens' (1812-1870) third novel, widely anticipated and loved. He is often considered the greatest of the Victorian era novelists, blending drama and comedy into compelling stories. In this novel Dickens explores the social issues that his works are known for, such as, harsh boarding schools, the privilege of royal title and wealth, social customs of the day and the plight of the working class. The plot focuses on the hardships courageously navigated by young Nicholas Nickleby after his father passes away. The extra illustrations provided were drawn by Joseph Kenny Meadows (1790 - 1874), best known for his drawings published in Punch magazine. He was a friend of Charles Dickens and several other writers of the period. These caricatures add a visual element to the characters depicted by Dickens [n.b. above… Read More
