An advocate of the cause of the Modocs, Miller lived with them in a quixotic attempt to form an Indian republic among the Pit River Indians, the Klamaths, Shastas, and Modocs. Includes Miller's romance with Paquita, the Modoc squaw who helped him escape from jail and was killed by soldiers for her efforts." (Zamorano LXXX, 40) Howes M-608.
