New York: Blelock & Co., 1866.8vo. Frontispiece portrait, [x], [2] 742, [2]pp. In-text battle plans, folding map, two photographically-reproduced battle maps inserted by later owner of this book. Publisher's cloth, rebacked with original spine laid down; spine gilt dulled; hinges tape-reinforced; a sound and very serviceable copy. Signatures and dated presentation inscriptions from the original owner to his son (1866), and later from the grandson to his nephew (1936).

First American edition. "Written by a member of Jackson's staff, with the help of Jackson's family. Next to Henderson, his most authoritative biography." Nevins II, p. 50: "While the work is polemical in its defense of the Southern cause, it contains much primary material."
