The corners are a bit bumped. Minimal fraying at the spine ends. The gilt on the binding is still quite fresh. The inner hinges are secure, and the text block is sound. Inscribed on the front flyleaf, "Presented to Master Geo. Hawe for deportment and scholarship St. Paul's School by his teacher J. V. Paynor / Wilmington, Dec. 25, 1874." The text is a little toned with some occasional foxing (heavier at the front and at the end), but overall an attractive copy. Illustrated with full-page illustrations and maps, and complete with the folding map of the Valley of Virginia at the end.
